THE OUTER WORLDS – REVIEW

THE OUTER WORLDS - REVIEW

Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds is a transcendent RPG that harkens back to the glory days of RPGs. A phenomenal blending of Fallout New Vegas with Firefly, The Outer Worlds is a hysterically well written game, with brilliant dialogue, innumerable variability in decision making and playstyles, a fascinating narrative, and fully alive worlds filled with memorable characters and creatures. Players can be the “knight in shining armor” hero, “man in the black hat” villain, something in between, or an agent of pure chaos. The Halcyon Colony is yours to mold. Combat is fun, with time dilation slow-downs, smooth gunplay, fluid melee attacks, and tactical companion abilities.

PHENOMENAL COMPANION CHARACTERS

Obsidian has always been phenomenal at creating wonderful companion characters, and does so again in The Outer Worlds. Parvati, Vicar Max, Nyoka, Felix, Ellie, and SAAM are a diverse and colorful crew, bringing depth and realism to the player’s journey, and adding humanity to interactions aboard The Unreliable (player’s ship). Parvati, in particular, is a perfect companion (Ashley Burch, who was her voice actor, was nominated for awards based on her portrayal of Parvati).

ONE OF BIGGEST XBOX FRANCHISES GOING FORWARD

The future is incredibly bright for this franchise. As an Xbox exclusive IP now, Outer Worlds has the potential to be one of Xbox’s biggest franchises next generation. With full backing and resources from the Xbox team going forward, The Outer Worlds can reach even greater heights, and become the perfect Sci-Fi RPG franchise. Obsidian already nailed it on this iteration, and I absolutely cannot wait for the sequel. In the meantime, new DLC will be coming to The Outer Worlds this year, so that will help tide us over ‘til the sequel. Seriously, go play this game now; its incredible!
