KINGDOMS OF AMALUR: RECKONING BC SHOWCASE
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a wonderful, Fable inspired RPG. The game has some of the most fluid and responsive combat seen in a fantasy RPG, with a vibrant, lore-packed, unique world and story, as well. The game is truly incredible, and should not be missed. Due to several factors outside its control, the game was largely overshadowed by other hits in the insanely packed year of 2011. Many people became fans of the game, and it developed a large, and passionate cult following, desperately hoping for a sequel. The behind the scenes story is almost as fascinating as the game. Its seizure by the State of Rhode Island, subsequent falling into legal hell, then almost a decade later being acquired by THQNordic, then being made BC for Xbox One, is a wild tale. But, that’s for another time, let’s talk about gameplay!
"IT'S EASY TO SEE ALL THE FINE WORK THAT R.A. SALVATORE, TODD MCFARLANE, AND KEN ROLSTON PUT INTO BREATHING THIS FANTASY WORLD TO LIFE"
As aforementioned, Amalur draws heavily upon Fable as a source of inspiration, both humor and art-wise. With a deep fantasy setting and story, the path is absolutely clear for a sequel. Considering the amount of time and money it took THQNordic to finally acquire the IP, and the sheer outpouring of love and support for it since the acquisition, a sequel seems likely. In Amalur, the player is a person without a Fate ordained by Destiny, meaning they’re free to choose their own path. This includes the way they make decisions and customize their character skills. Along with traditional swords, bows, and magic abilities, players are given huge skill trees with which to build and finetune their character. Want to be a master sorcerer with a stave and fire spells? Go ahead. Feeling like being a daring rogue, armed with a bow and daggers? Sounds fun. Like to charge the enemy head on with a big sword? You came to the right place. The game is fantastic in its customization options, and has very high replayability. The story, characters, world, lore, and design of the game are exceptional, as well. It’s easy to see all the fine work that R.A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane, and Ken Rolston put into breathing this fantasy world to life. I absolutely, wholeheartedly recommend Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning to anyone who loves RPGs, good writing, character customization, and fluid combat.
