HOMEFRONT: THE REVOLUTION PRODIGAL SHOWCASE
When Homefront: The Revolution launched, it was a total disaster. Between the game breaking bugs, rampant glitches, horrendous framerates, and graphic texture issues, the game was terrible. Critics justifiably blasted Homefront, bombing it with low scores. The game appeared to be heading for a future of clearance bin sales. But, buried under the technical issues, an intriguing game rested.
"INSTEAD OF ABANDONING THE GAME WHEN IT FELL FLAT ON ITS FACE AT LAUNCH, THE STUDIO BUCKLED DOWN, AND SAVED THE GAME."
For over a year post launch, Dambusters worked to fix the game. First the biggest issues were corrected, then smaller, but still important, problems were fixed. Not only did Dambusters fix most of the issues, they added a ton of new content and enhancements to the game as well. PS4 Pro and Xbox One X graphics and performance enhancements were rolled out, greatly boosting the capabilities of the game. To top it off, Dambusters crafted 3 DLC story expansions, which added hours of new content, and further fleshed out the Homefront story. Instead of abandoning the game when it fell flat on its face at launch, the studio buckled down, and saved the game.
"GUN CUSTOMIZATION, WEAPON CRAFTING, AND OTHER MECHANICS HELP DIVERSIFY THE COMBAT AND REPLAYABILITY."
The Story and gameplay were, and still are, the biggest selling points for the game. In Homefront, you play as an American rebel, working with other Americans to overthrow the North Korean army who had invaded and conquered the country. Voice acting for the characters is well done, and the story is well thought out and constructed. Gun customization, weapon crafting, and other mechanics help diversify the combat and replayability. Completing main quest and side quest missions would grant the player new weapons, gear, abilities, and the funds to further flesh out their arsenal. Stealth and guns-blazing are both valid options in this game, depending on player preference.
"WHILE NOT A MASTERPIECE, HOMEFRONT, AFTER ALL THE FIXES AND ENHANCEMENTS, IS A PRETTY GOOD GAME."
Homefront: The Revolution serves as a glowing example of a game that bounced back wonderfully from a dreadful start. While many studios and publishers abandon support for games which bomb out the gates, Dambusters stuck with it, and slowly, but surely, redeemed the game. While not a masterpiece, Homefront, after all the fixes and enhancements, is a pretty good game. Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a good story and gun customization.
