SUSHI STRIKERS: HIDDEN GEM REVIEW

SUSHI STRIKERS: HIDDEN GEM REVIEW

Sushi Strikers is cute, family friendly title, that’s about a young sushi striker trying to defeat the evil Empire. Sushi strikers are warriors who harness the power of sushi and sushi sprites to uphold virtues, and defeat villains. Stylistically, it is anime based, with a fun, cartoon aesthetic to it. The plot isn’t too serious or complicated, but is fun regardless. As a new sushi striker, you are tasked with gathering sushi spites to your cause, and using their abilities, along with your own, to defeat the Empire. sushi sprites are spirit animals who give the protagonist abilities for use in combat.

"COMBAT CONSISTS OF STACKING CHAINS OF PLATES, AND FLINGING THEM AT ENEMIES IN DUELS"

Regarding gameplay, Sushi Strikers resembles a mix of Pokémon and Tetris. Like Pokémon, you are a young trainer/warrior who quickly rises up the ranks, and collects monsters/sprites on your quest. These monsters/sprites level up as you progress through the story. In combat, you can have a party of three sprites, and use all of their abilities in a battle. Combat consists of stacking chains of plates, and flinging them at enemies in duels. Like Tetris, you have to work with quickly moving pieces. Where this differs, though, is that the plates are all different colors, and consist of different stats for combat. For example, a chain of pink plates deals a different amount of damage than a string of blue plates. Combat can seem a bit tricky at first, but once you pick it up, it flows splendidly.

"A GAME SUITABLE FOR ALL AUDIENCES, IT IS A NICE MIX OF ESTABLISHED GAMING STYLES"

Sushi Strikers is definitely not a hardcore game, with serious depth, but it is seriously fun. A game suitable for all audiences, it is a nice mix of established gaming styles. I picked up this game on a whim, and am glad I did. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys puzzle games, collecting monsters, and anime style games. It is very much a worthy addition to anyone’s Switch catalogue.
